Three months earlier, the German state of Hesse had issued guidance treating drying as a critical GMP manufacturing step that should, in principle, happen at the harvest site, a move\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/businessofcannabis.com\/no-right-to-gmp-washing-german-state-challenges-cannabis-flower-import-compliance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">widely reported as a direct challenge to &#8220;GMP washing&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0in imported flower. It reopened a debate that an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/luminorecruit.com\/de\/stoppt-die-bezeichnung-gmp-waschen-eine-diskussion-aus-dem-rahmen-der-ptmc-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">earlier PTMC 2026 panel on EU-GMP<\/a>\u00a0had already tackled from the regulatory side: where exactly does\u00a0<strong>GACP<\/strong>\u00a0end and\u00a0<strong>EU-GMP<\/strong>\u00a0begin? His systems push air through\u00a0<strong>HEPA filters<\/strong>\u00a0above and below the trays, creating what he called &#8220;a clean room within a clean room&#8221;, and dry to a uniform moisture content of around 10 to 12%.<\/li><li>To preserve\u00a0<strong>Terpene<\/strong>, Nick recommended drying at lower temperatures of around 16 to 18\u00b0C. On a simple example of 1,000 kilograms selling at \u20ac1,000 per kilo, a 20% failure wipes out\u00a0<strong>\u20ac200,000<\/strong>\u00a0in revenue, and even a 10% failure rate, he argued, can be the difference between profitability and bankruptcy. Ziel&#8217;s radiofrequency process\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2024\/01\/09\/2806519\/0\/en\/Ziel-Microbial-Control-Solution-for-Cannabis-Receives-EU-GMP-Certification.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">received EU-GMP certification for cannabis in 2024<\/a>.<\/li><li>Germany&#8217;s state of Hesse issued its guidance on 8 June 2026, treating controlled drying as a critical manufacturing step with critical process parameters, and expecting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/businessofcannabis.com\/no-right-to-gmp-washing-german-state-challenges-cannabis-flower-import-compliance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GMP drying and trimming to take place where the plants are harvested<\/a>\u00a0unless a company can prove otherwise. Dr Michal reported that inspectors in other German states have already started applying it.<\/li><li>Microbial limits still vary sharply across Europe. Dr Michal described Poland as the strictest market, where flower effectively has to be irradiated to be registered, with Germany the most lenient and the UK somewhere in between.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ee09e63 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"ee09e63\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-49eb1e1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"49eb1e1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" id=\"the-post-harvest-sequence-step-by-step\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Post-Harvest Sequence, Step by Step<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-72827e8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"72827e8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Between them, Nick and Arthur laid out the order of operations most EU-GMP facilities now follow after the plant is cut:<\/p><ol><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ol><li><strong>Harvest and buck:<\/strong>\u00a0plants are cut and the flowers stripped from the stems (bucking). For tray drying, bucking comes before drying.<\/li><li><strong>Dry:<\/strong>\u00a0on trays or hanging, at around 16 to 18\u00b0C, down to a moisture content of roughly 10 to 12%.<\/li><li><strong>Dry trim:<\/strong>\u00a0Nick recommends trimming after drying, since wet trimming &#8220;tends to be a little bit of a mess&#8221;.<\/li><li><strong>Cure:<\/strong>\u00a0the flower is cured before any microbial treatment.<\/li><li><strong>Microbial treatment:<\/strong>\u00a0the &#8220;kill step&#8221;, whether radiofrequency or irradiation, is the last stage before testing.<\/li><li><strong>Test and package:<\/strong>\u00a0release testing, then weighing and packing for the pharmacy or market.<\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-65c9a9e elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"65c9a9e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5cd439b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5cd439b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" id=\"how-producers-are-responding-to-germany&#039;s-drying-rule\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How Producers Are Responding to Germany's Drying Rule<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9224d42 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9224d42\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The panel described three ways producers are adapting to Hesse&#8217;s guidance, each with its own trade-off:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Dry under GMP at the harvest site:<\/strong>\u00a0the most direct route, but it means building a GMP drying room at the farm itself.<\/li><li><strong>Buy wet flower locally and dry it yourself:<\/strong>\u00a0Arthur described a large Canadian exporter buying up all the wet flower it can within an eight-hour drive of its premises, then drying it on site under GMP. The approach has limits. Nick described a South African client trucking wet flower for ten hours, which he said adds cost without improving anything, and Dr Michal warned that wet flower shipped for a day or two can simply be thrown away.<\/li><li><strong>Split the drying:<\/strong>\u00a0some producers pre-dry to around 18 to 20% moisture under GACP, then finish in a GMP drying room. Nick questioned the logic, since it means building two sets of drying rooms when a GMP drying room only needs a little more dehumidification capacity to do the whole job.<\/li><\/ul><p>There is also an early precedent for flexibility.
