The legal cannabis industry is booming. In Europe the industry was valued at roughly €11 billion in 2025, and this is projected to increase to roughly €92 billion in 2035.
With this growth comes a wealth of career opportunities. But how do you break into this exciting, fast-paced, yet highly regulated sector?
Whether you’re a seasoned professional looking to pivot or a passionate enthusiast eager to turn your love for the plant into a career, this article will guide you through the ins and outs of building a successful career in cannabis.
We’ll cover the key sectors within the industry, the skills you need, and the mindset required to thrive.
Back in 2023, during the Product Earth event held in the UK, Lumino led an expert panel around the topic: “Building a Career in the Cannabis Industry”.
The panel comprised experts across the various verticals of the cannabis industry, namely: AJ Mishra (Lumino’s Recruitment Director), Marc Burbidge, Dr. Gary Yates, and Ronan Smith.
At the time when the panel was held, Marc Burbidge was the CEO & Founder of B3 Labs, Dr. Gary Yates was the Chief Scientific Officer at PharmaSeeds, and Ronan Smith was the Strategic Marketing Planner at Milk & Amber.
Even if this discussion took place years ago, the advice given is still very much relevant today for those wondering how to get a job in the cannabis industry. We also thought writing this brief summary of key insights would be helpful for those unable to watch or listen through the entire 40+ minute discussion.
If you want to listen to the recording – by all means – here it is below:
Why work in the Cannabis Industry?
Let’s start with the obvious: cannabis is no longer just a counterculture movement. It’s a legitimate, multi-billion-euro industry with opportunities spanning cultivation, marketing, sales, research, and more.
As you can see from the numerous industry updates posted on our resources & blog page, the cannabis industry is dynamic, fast-paced, and full of potential. But it’s also challenging. It’s not just about loving the plant – it’s about resilience, adaptability, and hard work.

Key Sectors for Employment
The cannabis industry is vast, with multiple roles cooperating to get the product from seed to sale.
As such, you can pretty much find any type of role in the industry – even the more “conventional” ones commonly found in most other industries.
At Lumino, we like to categorise roles into 3 main buckets: plant facing, medical & commercial.
1. Plant Facing Sector
As the name suggests, roles in this category work directly with the cannabis plant itself. These roles typically require candidates to have existing experience working with cannabis or, at the very least, practical knowledge on dealing with the plant (through courses, certifications, etc.).
These include Cultivation/Production, Extraction/Manufacturing, Product Development, and R&D roles.
Some examples of job titles under this category are: Directors of Cultivation, Master Growers, Agronomists, Growers, Extraction Technicians, Plant Scientists, Qualified Person, Quality Control, Quality Assurance, and Research Scientists.
2. Medical Sector
Roles in this category work in pharmaceutical or clinical operations – where medical cannabis is either a part or the main focus of the company. These roles typically require higher-level education in disciplines such as biology, medicine, chemistry, and pharmacology.
Some examples of job titles under this category are: Managing Director, Specialist Clinicians, Clinic Managers, Chief Medical Officers, Medical Affairs, Medical Science Liaisons, and Registered Nurses
3. Commercial Sector
The roles in this category operate the “business side” of the company. It is under this category where most “conventional” jobs are found.
It depends on the job description and the specific requirements of the company, but we’ve managed to place many candidates without any existing experience in the cannabis industry in these roles. Most successfully placed candidates came from an FMCG or pharma background. Overall, what counts are possessing specific transferrable skills (largely dependent on the role), with the ideal of having working experience in a highly regulated or dynamic industry.
Some examples of job titles under this category are: C-Suite roles (i.e., CEO, CFO, COO, etc.), Top & Middle Management, Account Managers, Project Managers, Sales Managers, Marketing Managers, Senior Sales Representatives, Marketers, etc.
Top Tips for Getting a Job in the Cannabis Industry
Here’s a list of pointers on how to get in the cannabis industry which will be further elaborated upon in this article.
1. Understand the Landscape of the Cannabis Industry
The first step would be to reach a basic understanding of the cannabis plant and some common terminology relating to the plant as this will come in handy when conversing with industry professionals.
For this, we highly recommend you view our list of top cannabis resources. From books, newsletters to podcasts, our list offers both beginners and veterans alike a comprehensive understanding of the plant and the industry built on it.
Specific action points would be to: 👇🏼
- Familiarize yourself with the various sectors within the industry, including cultivation, distribution, retail, and ancillary services. Each of these areas present their own unique opportunities and challenges.
- Regularly read up on market trends and opportunities to stay ahead. The cannabis market is rapidly evolving, with new products and services emerging regularly. Stay informed by following industry news, subscribing to relevant publications, and engaging with thought leaders on social media. Success in the cannabis industry, perhaps more than any other industry, requires continuous learning.
- Finally, recognize the regulatory challenges that come with the cannabis industry. This may be a bit more challenging as laws and regulations vary significantly from country to country, state to state and even within local jurisdictions, and it is common for these laws and regulations to change over time. How deep you go into this will largely depend on your role, but having just a surface-level understanding of cannabis’ legal complexity will be helpful not only in demonstrating your knowledge during interviews but also in your job.

2. Identify Gaps in the Market
One of the lesser-known job search strategies for cannabis industry success is identifying key areas of employment.
The cannabis industry is diverse, and comprises a multitude of roles across plant-facing, medical & commercial verticals. First, understand these sectors, and then research job roles and responsibilities within each area.
Here, you can start by visiting job boards – such as Lumino’s job board – and industry-specific websites to see what positions are in demand. Attending cannabis job fairs or networking events (we recommend reading our article on the best cannabis events to attend in Europe in 2026) can also provide insights into what employers are looking for.
By understanding required qualifications, and identifying the skills that employers value most, you can pinpoint where your strengths align with industry needs. For example, if you have a background in marketing, focus on roles within the CBD sector that require strong branding and communication skills.
Finally, evaluate your fit based on skills and interests. This self-assessment is crucial as it helps you determine where you can make the most impact.
Ask yourself questions like:
- What are you passionate about?
- What skills do you excel at? (i.e., what have others constantly praised you about, or what tasks come easy to you?)
By answering these questions, you can create a targeted job search strategy that aligns with your career goals.

3. Identify your Transferable Skills for the Cannabis Industry
As you embark on your journey in the cannabis industry, recognizing your transferable skills becomes crucial.
How do you do this? 👇🏼
- Reflect on your past experiences and pinpoint the abilities that can seamlessly transition into this new field. For example, if you’ve worked in hospitality, your customer service skills can translate beautifully into a role at a cannabis dispensary.
- Consider the relevant skills you’ve gained from other industries. Perhaps you’ve worked in finance, where you developed strong analytical skills. These skills can help you understand market trends and consumer behaviors in the cannabis sector. By drawing connections between your previous roles and potential positions in cannabis, you can present yourself as a well-rounded candidate who brings valuable insights from diverse backgrounds.
- In addition to hard skills, don’t overlook the importance of soft skills like leadership and adaptability. The cannabis industry is constantly evolving, and you must be prepared to face challenges head-on. Embracing a mindset that welcomes change will not only help you adapt but also position you as a proactive team member who contributes positively to the workplace culture.
- Finally, showcasing your passion for cannabis can set you apart. If applicable, share your personal journey with cannabis, and how it has impacted your life or inspired your career path. Whether through social media, community events, or networking opportunities, demonstrate your commitment to the cannabis field and attract the right opportunities. By expressing your genuine enthusiasm, you can connect with potential employers on a deeper level. It is important to note, however, that you cannot rely solely on passion to get a job without also bringing valued skills, education and/or experience to the table.

4. Embrace the Cannabis Community
As you navigate the cannabis industry, you quickly realize that networking is a fundamental strategy for unlocking career opportunities.
Some practical action points: 👇🏼
- Attending industry events can significantly expand your horizons. By going to cannabis expos, trade shows, and local meetups, you can immerse yourself in the culture and connect with cannabis professionals. These events often feature panel discussions and workshops, providing insights into the latest trends and innovations, while serving as platforms to meet potential employers, recruiters, or even individuals who can help put in a good word for you to their Hiring Manager. Come prepared with questions and an elevator pitch that succinctly explains who you are and what you hope to achieve.
- Leverage platforms like LinkedIn or Instagram (wherever they are most active) to connect with industry professionals or companies, and engage with their content.
- Following up after initial meetings is crucial. Take the time to send a personalized message expressing your appreciation for the conversation and reiterating your interest in staying connected. This not only shows professionalism but also keeps you on their radar. Staying persistent is key; periodically reach out to check in, share relevant articles, or simply say hello.
- Joining professional organisations or online forums dedicated to cannabis. These platforms provide opportunities to engage in discussions, ask questions, and share insights. Being active in these communities can enhance your visibility and credibility.

5. Gain Relevant Experience
To truly make your mark in the cannabis industry, gaining practical experience that enhances your profile is essential.

If you’re just starting out, one effective approach is to seek volunteer opportunities in cannabis-related fields. Volunteering allows you to gain hands-on experience while building connections within the industry.
In addition to volunteering, consider internships or entry-level positions. These roles provide an excellent platform to apply your skills in a real-world setting while learning from experienced professionals. Internships often lead to full-time opportunities, as they allow employers to assess your fit within their organization.
Pursuing relevant courses and certifications is another effective way to boost your qualifications. As the cannabis industry gets more recognised, a growing number of educational institutions and online platforms offer specialized programs focused on the plant and the operations involved in its distribution. By enrolling in these courses, you can acquire essential knowledge that sets you apart from other candidates. As one expert highlighted, “Having formal education in cannabis can be a game-changer for your career. It shows employers that you’re serious and informed.”
Additionally, seek opportunities to learn from experienced professionals in the field. This could involve reaching out to mentors or industry leaders for informational interviews, where you can gain insights into their career paths and gather advice on navigating the industry. By tapping into their experiences, you can avoid common pitfalls and identify strategies for success. Moreover, not only does doing this expand your knowledge, but it also helps you build a network of contacts who can guide you along the way.

And as mentioned in an earlier point, don’t overlook the experience you’ve gained from other industries. Many skills are transferable, such as customer service, project management, and regulatory compliance.
In summary, gaining practical experience, pursuing relevant education, learning from industry professionals, and recognizing the value of your existing skills are crucial steps you can take to enhance your profile in the cannabis sector.

6. Develop a Strong Personal Brand
A personal brand is how you present yourself to the world, significantly influencing your job prospects.
Creating a professional online presence is an essential step in building your brand:
- Update your LinkedIn profile to reflect your skills, experiences, and aspirations in the cannabis sector.
- Including relevant keywords related to the industry will help you appear in searches by recruiters.
- Showcase any certifications or courses you’ve completed, as this demonstrates your commitment to professional growth.
Another important aspect is tailoring your resume specifically for the cannabis sector:
- Highlight experiences and skills that align with the industry’s needs. For instance, if you have experience in compliance, emphasize your understanding of regulations and how you’ve navigated them in past roles.
- Using industry-specific language will resonate more with potential employers. A resume that speaks the language of the industry shows that you’re not just interested, but informed.
Finally, as mentioned earlier, utilize social media for networking:
- Platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram and even Twitter can be powerful tools for professional connections in the cannabis industry.
- Follow industry leaders, engage with their content, and share your insights or experiences.
- Participate in discussions and join relevant groups to connect with like-minded individuals.
7. Prepare for Interviews with Confidence
As you gear up for interviews in the cannabis industry, preparation is essential.
The interview process can be daunting, but you can turn that anxiety into excitement by being well-prepared.
- First, you should research potential employers thoroughly. Understanding a company’s mission, values, and recent developments can give you a significant edge. You can visit their website, read their latest press releases, and follow them on social media to get a sense of their culture and priorities.
- Next, you need to practice common interview questions that are likely to come up. Questions about your experience, skills, and why you want to work in the cannabis industry are common. Prepare answers that reflect your unique journey and aspirations. Role-playing with a friend or mentor can help you refine your delivery and boost your confidence.
- Most importantly, you must showcase your unique value proposition during the interview. Clearly articulate what sets you apart from other candidates. Use specific examples from your past experiences to illustrate how you can contribute to the company’s success.
- A useful framework to adopt when answering questions is the S.T.A.R. framework. This is a way to structure interview answers by explaining the Situation you were in, the Task you needed to accomplish, the Action you took, and the Result you achieved. It helps you give clear, focused examples that show what you did, how you did it, and the impact it had.

8. Develop Resilience & Adaptability
Yes, we know it may sound cliché, but it holds true for the cannabis industry.
Cannabis is often associated with relaxation and slowing down, so those unaware are often surprised to find that working in the cannabis industry is tough.

Challenges are inevitable, but how you respond to them defines your progress. Viewing setbacks as learning opportunities allows you to reflect, adjust, and improve. As one panelist put it, every setback can become a setup for growth if you take the time to learn from it.
A strong work ethic and determination are equally important in a competitive market. Employers value professionals who consistently deliver high-quality work and show commitment beyond their job description. Effort and persistence can often outweigh experience, especially early in your career.
Remaining open to feedback is another key factor in long-term success. Constructive criticism helps identify blind spots and sharpen your skills. Actively seeking input from colleagues and mentors shows maturity and a genuine commitment to improvement.
By embracing challenges, working hard, and using feedback to grow, you can develop the resilience and adaptability needed to succeed in the cannabis industry with confidence.

In Summary...
To break into the cannabis industry, focus less on “cannabis experience” and more on your attitude, resilience, and transferable skills: know what you’re good at, deepen those skills in mainstream sectors (like pharma, food, agriculture, regulated marketing, finance, or operations), and then actively network, make personal contact, and keep following up even after a “no.”
Show passion by learning in your own time. Take short courses, read, volunteer in related environments, and be ready to start at an entry level, prove your work ethic, and grow. Be humble, adaptable, and comfortable with change in a fast-moving, heavily regulated space, and don’t be afraid to challenge and impress hiring managers with thoughtful questions and informed views.
